Ulysse Nardin Skeleton X Sparkling
The new Ulysse Nardin Skeleton X Sparkling shares much in common with the Skeleton X, an openworked timepiece launched in January 2019. However, where the Skeleton X Sparkling differs from its older sibling is that it is embellished with a total of 149 diamonds and includes a colour-coordinated barrel cover.
Ulysse Nardin was founded in 1846 and soon became known for making highly accurate marine chronometers. However, despite having a long and impressive history, the brand has not chosen to dwell in the past. Indeed, it has often been at the vanguard of horological innovation. For example, the Maison was one of the pioneers of silicon technology, an area of expertise which several years later remains the preserve of only a few firms.
In January 2019, the Manufacture unveiled the Skeleton X. The model still remains a member of the present-day collection and is offered in a number of variants. Consistent with the company’s avant-garde mindset, the watch brims with modernity. The skeletonised movement masterfully showcases the barrel, gear train, motion works, winding mechanism and balance. There are few secrets left untold.
Part of this watch’s allure is the way the dial interestingly plays with shapes. The indexes at 1, 5, 7 and 11 o’clock are elongated, forming an X-shape. A rectangular bridge, positioned in the centre of the dial, frames the gear train as well as the hour and minute hands. All dial elements are encircled by a round chapter ring. Despite the variety of shapes employed, the composition remains harmonious.
Now the brand from Le Locle has unveiled the new Ulysse Nardin Skeleton X Sparkling. This model is based on the Skeleton X but enlivened with diamond-set components, including the bezel and indexes. The Ulysse Nardin Skeleton X Sparkling is available with a titanium or pink gold case. Depending on the chosen colourway, the barrel is adorned with mother-of-pearl or black PVD brass.
Consistent with the Skeleton X, the Skeleton X Sparkling features the hand-wound Calibre UN-371. This high-tech movement features a large diameter balance wheel made of silicon featuring nickel inert masses. The low mass of silicon contributes to the impressive power reserve of 96 hours, while the extraordinary scale of the balance wheel augments accuracy.

The brand’s press release (February 2021)
After having unveiled its new Skeleton X in 2019, a skeleton watch showcasing watchmaking technology and complexity, Ulysse Nardin is adding two models to its collection, embellished with diamonds for enthusiasts of exclusive and sparkling timepieces. The diamonds, the purest mineral made of a single element, are enigmatic and a symbol of rigour. They sensually adorn these two marvels to reflect the strength and invincibility rooted in each of us.
There are two versions of the Skeleton X Sparkling: a white titanium version with a mother-of-pearl decoration on the barrel and a white alligator strap, and a black 4N pink gold version with a black PVD brass barrel cover and a black alligator strap.
With its skeleton structure, the Skeleton X Sparkling opens itself up and allows you to see what makes it tick, revealing all its secrets. The boundaries between the inside and outside are erased. Shrouded in diamonds, its appearance pushes to a pinnacle, the transparency of its powerful UN-371 manufacture movement. Thanks to a meticulously open structure which however conserves its resilience to impacts, the breathtaking beauty of its beating heart is striking.
Decorated with 80 diamonds on the bezel and 69 on the dial, the Skeleton X Sparkling collection is of a relatively small size of only 42mm and fully follows the current trend: its curves give way to sharp lines for more masculinity. Its nested geometry – an X formed by four of the hour markers is framed by a rectangle, itself in a circle – is a real treat for the eyes.
A refined profile and silhouette, crafted finishes, a hand-polished surface for a sparkling lustre, the Skeleton X Sparkling reveals the work of the craftsman as well as the experience and know-how of the watchmaker. All is transparency, whereas the invisible mechanisms of time are unmasked in all their splendour.
Inside and clearly visible beats one of the FREAK VISION’s greatest innovations: an extra-wide, super-light balance wheel in silicon, with nickel flyweights and stabilizing micro-blades. The Manufacture movement, UN- 371 calibre, is an entirely reworked version of the UN-171 movement. The 96-hour power reserve is displayed through the apertures on the barrel visible on the back of the watch.
