Roger Dubuis Excalibur Blacklight

The Roger Dubuis Excalibur Blacklight emits vibrant shades in dim light, designed to replicate neon lights in an urban setting. Consistent with several other models from the Manufacture, the Excalibur Blacklight features a skeleton movement and bears the prestigious Poinçon de Genève on its case.

Roger Dubuis is based in Meyrin, a municipality close to the Swiss city of Geneva. Within the confines of a modern atelier, avant-garde timpieces are painstakingly crafted by time-served hands. The marketing-types in Swiss watch firms often talk of models being ‘audacious’ or ‘disruptive’, but having heard these terms being used by numerous brands over several years, they no longer have much currency. However, one brand which could use these words with justification is Roger Dubuis.

A Roger Dubuis timepiece exudes exuberance and in some quarters it could even be described as flamboyant. The Manufacture doesn’t do shy and retiring, its models make a statement. Despite the contemporary nature of each model, there is a high-quotient of traditional hand-craftsmanship. Every Roger Dubuis timepiece bears the Poinçon de Genève on its case. This hallmark necessitates much additional work. For example, the Calibre RD820SQ requires ‘530 hours of manufacturing, including 170 hours devoted to the Poinçon de Genève’. The road to excellence is clearly arduous and time-consuming.

The new Roger Dubuis Excalibur Blacklight features a skeleton movement, the aforementioned Calibre RD820SQ. A skeleton movement requires much expertise, an attribute the Maison has in seemingly copious amounts. This latest watch emulates the appearance of neon lights that illuminate world-famous cities by employing a ‘web of crystalline UV-reactive micro-structures’ interwoven into its skeletonised calibre which produce vibrant hues in dim light.

Prospective purchasers have a choice of two case options, white gold or rose gold. Both versions of the Roger Dubuis Excalibur Blacklight are adorned with gem-set bezels.

Like the city, the Excalibur Blacklight transforms at the boundary between day and night: by day, the timepiece wreathes itself in subtle, dignified tones of white, black and grey; by night, the calibre and flange of the timepiece explode in a kaleidoscopic livery of other-worldly colours. Like the bevy of neon lights that make cities come alive after sundown, this triumph of technology and aesthetics illuminate the timepiece in an explosion of artistic creativity.

Featuring the Maison’s innovative automatic skeleton RD820SQ calibre, the Excalibur Blacklight is distinguished by a web of crystalline UV-reactive sapphire micro-structures interwoven into its already impressive skeletonised calibre. It is thus that the timepiece transforms into an objet d’art – an expression of mechanical artistry combining passion with cutting-edge technology. Providing the finishing flourish to the Excalibur Blacklight vivid interpretation of major Asian capitals as neon-lit cities the handsome white gold case is set with a constellation of round diamonds juxtaposed against a daringly 21st century luminescent rubber bracelet.

Expect the unexpected

Roger Dubuis fans are accustomed to expecting the unexpected. True to form, the brand that dares to be different has teamed up with one of the city’s last neon masters, Wu Chi Kai, to transform one of Roger Dubuis’ signature codes into one of Hong Kong’s iconic neon lights in tribute to the Excalibur Blacklight.

Says Wu: “Neon art is obviously something very close to my heart, and it is something that gives Hong Kong its flavour and metropolitan feel. The art of neon is also one that requires attention to detail, experience and craftsmanship – skills and character that I respect in the watchmakers of Roger Dubuis. As a neon maker, I can truly appreciate how Roger Dubuis has used this very special art and technique to bring to life the Excalibur Blacklight.”

A boutique-exclusive limited-edition of just eight pieces, and the ultimate statement piece, the Excalibur Blacklight is for those who truly wish to stand out while honouring the spectacular visual vibe of ultra-modern Asian cityscapes.
