Maurice Lacroix AIKON Automatic Chronograph Limited Edition AI6038-SS001-133-1
The Maurice Lacroix AIKON Automatic Chronograph Limited Edition builds on the success of its forebears. It is endowed with a distinctive dial enriched with shades of grey, blue and red. Limited to just 500 examples, this is arguably the most handsome and masculine version of the highly popular AIKON watch.

If you appraise iconic designs, they beget variants. For example, a legendary car may be offered with two wheel drive and four wheel drive, hard top and soft top and a multitude of engine options. However, despite these obvious differences, the DNA of the original design continues to shine through.
In 2016, I remember seeing the designs for the forthcoming AIKON, a new watch by Maurice Lacroix. It was inspired by a former model in the brand’s back catalogue, the Calypso. I looked at the prototypes with interest, appreciating the watch’s handsome lines.
Initially, the watch was only available in quartz versions, however, mechanical movements later joined the collection. Indeed, over the last 12 months, the brand has introduced several versions of the AIKON, including automatic, chronograph and skeleton options. The AIKON seems destined to achieve legendary status.
Maurice Lacroix clearly recognises the importance of not standing still and the need to frequently innovate, extending the stretch of the AIKON collection without losing the essence of what makes it special.
Recently, the Swiss Maison unveiled a new timepiece, the Maurice Lacroix AIKON Automatic Chronograph Limited Edition. This is not the first limited edition AIKON but, in my opinion, it is the most attractive version to date. The chronograph incorporates many of the AIKON’s handsome features but tastefully employs grey, blue and red hues, imbuing the watch with a distinctive mien.
Recently, the brand kindly loaned me the watch for a few days of hands-on assessment.
The Maurice Lacroix AIKON Automatic Chronograph Limited Edition is furnished with a silvery grey dial. The tone of the grey is light and fresh, infusing the watch with a youthful, almost innocent character. The dial membrane is enriched with a textured motif comprised of numerous squares, arranged in rows.
The rhodium plated hour and minute hands are lined with luminescent fill and combine with applied, faceted indexes. They impart time with impressive clarity. Three snailed subdials populate the dial, employing both blue and red hues. A 12-hour chronograph register sits in the lower portion of the dial while a 30-minute counter is located below noon. A combination of Arabic numerals and / or neat strokes facilitates read-off. Positioned adjacent 9 o’clock, a third subdial shows the running seconds. This latter subdial is marginally smaller than its neighbouring registers, providing sufficient space for all indications to breathe.
Adjacent the crown, two apertures frame the day and date. These indications are presented in white against a black background. Their modern typeface confers excellent legibility. The brand’s logo is presented in gleaming form, positioned just above said day-date display.
Red is also judiciously used for the central chronograph seconds hand. The tip of this slender and vibrantly-hued hand floats above the chapter ring, facilitating ease of read-off. The blue chapter ring is marked with ¼ second integers which matches the frequency of the movement (4Hz).
The case of the Maurice Lacroix AIKON Automatic Chronograph Limited Edition is generously proportioned, measuring 44mm in diameter. The case is a lug-free design, drawing the strap close to the watch head. This design characteristic induces the strap to envelop the wearer’s wrist, making the watch ‘wear’ smaller than its stated diameter would suggest.
Personally, in common with other AIKON models, I find the Maurice Lacroix AIKON Automatic Chronograph Limited Edition incredibly comfortable to wear. I can only assume it is the close relationship between the case and the strap which grants this blissful union.
The strap is made of matte blue calf leather, embellished with ebullient red stitching. However, its sumptuous appearance reminds me of the suede-like trim gracing the interior of certain Italian sports cars. The resultant appearance exudes luxury. Another delightful feature of the watch is the Maison’s EasyChange system, allowing the wearer to fit alternative straps without the need for tools. Creating a new look has never been easier.
Consistent with other Maurice Lacroix AIKON models, the Automatic Chronograph Limited Edition features the distinctive six-arms bezel. The chronograph pushers are of the screw-down variety, preventing accidental operation underwater. This timepiece has a maximum water resistance of 200 metres.
Front of house, a flat sapphire provides a glare-free view of the dial indications. On the reverse of the watch, a further pane of sapphire crystal affords views of the self-winding movement.
The automatic ML 112 movement contains 25 jewels and the power reserve is sufficient to deliver 48 hours of autonomous operation. The balance has a frequency of 28,800 VpH (4Hz).
The bridges and rotor are adorned with vertical Côtes de Genève motif. Moreover, perlage abounds. Both decorations provide a telling reminder that the AIKON harnesses a high quotient of Swiss craftsmanship
The Maurice Lacroix AIKON Automatic Chronograph Limited Edition is bright, fresh, elegant and masculine. Its dial proffers matchless legibility and a handsome appearance. By shrewdly selecting colours that readily coalesce, Maurice Lacroix has produced an AIKON with its own distinct personality. Nevertheless, the AIKON DNA prevails, a quality which it shares with several iconic designs.
Design is a speciality of the Maison. Throughout its history, the Swiss firm has conceived many thought-provoking watches. Furthermore, the company has cleverly paired quality components that exude a sense of luxury whilst at the same time delivering extraordinary value for money. The brand refers to this as ‘high perceived value’, something that is tangible when holding one of its watches. Indeed, with an AIKON watch, quality and solidity are omnipresent.
The Maurice Lacroix AIKON is a success story, with many owners choosing the model for its impressive array of attributes. The AIKON DNA is common to each member of the collection, including this latest limited edition model, however, the Swiss company has recognised would-be wearers appreciate choice. The Maurice Lacroix AIKON Automatic Chronograph Limited Edition AI6038-SS001-133-1 delivers something new, while upholding the essence of what makes the AIKON collection special.
