Jaquet Droz Grande Heure Minute Quantième
Angus Davies reviews the Jaquet Droz Grande Heure Minute Quantième Ref. J017530240
This detailed review of the Jaquet Droz Grande Heure Minute Quantième includes live images and specification details.
Recently, I chatted to a group of my son’s friends and noted one girl who stood with her back straight and toes pointed outwards. Her deportment was exemplary and I felt obliged to enquire whether she had ever studied ballet. Not surprisingly she answered in the affirmative and my suspicions proved well founded.
There is something elegant when a lady walks with her chin held high and back perfectly perpendicular to terra firma, exhibiting a graceful gait. Whenever I hold a Jaquet Droz timepiece in my hands, I am struck by the balletic poise it presents and the Grande Heure Minute Quantième, launched earlier this year, proves to be no exception.
A recent encounter with this sophisticated horological prima ballerina ensnared my heart with its enchanting mien. While this timepiece shares some design codes with other Jaquet Droz models, it also exhibits some new artistic flourishes I have not previously seen from this Swiss watch brand which may attract a wider audience.
Jaquet Droz offers would-be buyers two dial options, a silvered opaline canvas and an attractive blue dial variant, featuring Côtes de Genève motif.

I confess, that I fell for the beguiling charms of the silver toned dial. Its silvery hued complexion is free of excessive adornment, imparting a sweet sense of innocence.
Unlike several models within Jaquet Droz’s collection, the dial of the Jaquet Droz Grande Heure Minute Quantième does not feature two entwined subdials, delivered in seemly union. Indeed, this model, on the face of it, adopts a more conventional aesthetic.
However, initial appearances can be deceptive. Analysis of each element of the dial’s composition bequeaths soupçons of joy. The blued steel lancine hour and minute hands majestically express time like a ballerina’s extended limbs, positioned croisè devant.
The central seconds hand is lithe and features a red tip with a circular counterbalance near its fulcrum. Everything is considered, becoming and tasteful. The aforementioned red tip of the central seconds hand interfaces with a railroad chapter ring, aiding ease of read-off.
The hours are indicated with applied rhodium-treated indexes, imparting meaning with clear diction.
Most notably, it is the date aperture which is probably my favourite aspect of the dial design. Located above 6 o’clock, the date display sits below the dial canvas. In itself, this may not sound remarkable, however, it is the sloping contours which lead to the dial aperture which are fabulous. This magnificent flourish of originality draws the eye to the date displayed, proving highly practical. Moreover, the angled planes adjacent the aperture bestow attractive pockets of shade, contrasting with the light tone of the main dial surface.
The Jaquet Droz Grande Heure Minute Quantième is available in two case sizes, 39mm and 43mm. I personally favour the latter model as it seems better suited to my own physique.
Whilst I have often appreciated the charms of Jaquet Droz watches blessed with rich golden cases, the cool temperament of this stainless steel offering augments the appeal of the timepiece with its chaste virtue.
All surfaces of the case are highly polished. This may sound a tad conspicuous for a timepiece with such a reserved character, but the softly spoken persona of this watch remains intact.
As the crown emanates from the caseband it increases in diameter, proving both attractive and simple to operate.
Arcing lines are expertly employed by Jaquet Droz. The caseband is curved and the lugs taper downwards, encouraging the strap to envelop the wearer’s wrist.
The self-winding JD1150P movement was first released in 2014. This calibre is equipped with a silicon hairspring. This know-how is the preserve of only a few maisons at the vanguard of watchmaking technology. The hairspring is anti-magnetic, not subject to corrosion and resistant to changes in temperature, all conferring tangible benefits in the sphere of haute horlogerie.
Purists should not fear, Jaquet Droz has not eschewed fine watchmaking traditions. The open-worked oscillating mass, visible via the exhibition caseback, allows the wearer to appraise the bridges adorned with Côtes de Genève rayonnantes and circular grained wheels. Rest assured, everything is distilled to a high standard.
The JD1150P movement has a prodigious power reserve of 68 hours, courtesy of twin barrels, the balance has a frequency of 28,800 vph (4Hz) and the movement contains 28 jewels.
Jaquet Droz has masterfully produced a timepiece which will appeal to its loyal clientele who appreciate the elegant design language for which the brand has become known. Equally, the Jaquet Droz Grande Heure Minute Quantième offers something new, and very different, to those prospective purchasers who may not have previously considered this Swiss watch company’s fine timepieces.
I applaud the watch company for daring to be brave and venturing into new territory while at the same time delivering a spellbinding, almost balletic portrayal of time, with delightful deportment still much in evidence.
