Falling under the spell of love, beneath the midnight sky
The Harry Winston name is synonymous with elegance and timelessness, the quintessence of the midnight hour. This timepiece, the Harry Winston Midnight Big Date, may well cause you to fall under the spell of love.
I am a dreamer, who gazes at the clear night sky with an optimistic heart. There are few times of the day, more timeless than midnight with its zero value. I look upwards towards the jewelled black canvas, which proffers wonderment with its elegant grandeur. A warm sense of well-being permeates my soul despite the cool ambient air enveloping my body.
Midnight is for lovers and a snap shot in time where history and future, briefly embrace. This watch blends classicism with modernity and has been aptly named.
It is no surprise that Harry Winston choose to use the word, “Midnight” in a selection of handsome timepieces. The Harry Winston name is synonymous with elegance and timelessness, the quintessence of the midnight hour.
One glance at this masculine timepiece and it is obvious that this watch embraces many metaphors for nocturnal life.
Available with a silver or black dial, the latter being the focus of my attention. The hours and minutes are located on a circular sub-dial beneath noon. White gold, lozenge shaped hands impart hours and minutes, against a snailed background. Simple white marks, economically indicate the minutes.
Enveloping the aforementioned subdial is an egg shaped satin-brushed chapter ring, “excentred” at 12 o’clock. Hours are marked with Arabic numerals, presented in white gold, save for 3, 6 and 9 o’clock, where batons reside. At noon the HW logo is proudly displayed. A delightful detail is the sunray motif on the chapter ring; it guides the eyes to the fulcrum of the hours and minute display.
The remaining area of the dial is detailed with concentric lines, presented in black. They are the sublime outcome of the guillocheurs skill. Resembling rippling waters they toy with the sodium light of illuminated street lamps.
At the southerly aspect of the dial is a large date, presented via two apertures within a further subdial. This overlaps the satin brushed chapter ring previously mentioned and resembles a Venn diagram. The subdial has a small diamond, perched above the date. It reminds the wearer that this watch is from Harry Winston, a man known to carry a loose gem in his pocket, purely for the sheer pleasure of rolling it between his fingers.
A case diameter of 42mm will suit a broad range of potential wearers. Whilst the watch is available in rose gold, I prefer the white gold variant. It is cool, understated and eminently refined.
All surfaces of the case including horns, bezel, caseband and caseback are highly polished. There is only one obvious area where the gold is satin brushed and that is the iconic Harry Winston arches beside the crown.
The strap is drawn close to the caseband and nuzzles the lugs. There is very little clearance, no excessive daylight peeping between the case and strap. This provides a neat, tidy appearance which sits comfortably with my obsessive compulsive disorder.
A self-winding movement is courtesy of Frederic Piguet. The rotor, marked with the HW logo, is skeletonised affording a greater view of the movement.
The wearer can immerse himself in the refined execution of the finissage courtesy of a sapphire caseback. Admire the fine finishing, including the Côtes de Genève motif on the bridges.
A power reserve of 70 hours allows the watch to be placed on a dressing table when retiring to bed, firm in the knowledge it will be function away from the wearer’s wrist for a substantial period.
When Ira Gershwin wrote the lyrics to, “Nice Work If You Can Get It”, he referred to the misguided obsessions with money and fame. The lyrics refer to seeking love and “Holding hands at midnight, ‘neath a starry sky”.
There can be few romantic times to usurp the midnight hour. There is little in life more fulfilling than making the acquaintance of a beautiful woman. This will satisfy the hungriest heart in need of loving sustenance.
This watch is a stylish timepiece, aesthetically alluring, providing the perfect accoutrement for those men who seek elegance and refinement.
The Harry Winston Midnight Big Date is a worthy adornment to the wrist of any male suitor who holds the hand of a fair lady, bathed in the moonlight at the strike of 12.
