I have shared my passion for flying before with “Escapement” readers and my passion for Bremont watches.

The world of aviation is full of surprises. When I was an instructor I used to say to my students, “Expect the unexpected”. It would seem that the same challenge comes from the world of Bremont watches.

The MW Heli-chrono, based on Bremont’s ALT1-P Chronograph range, adds to what is already a superlative range of aviation timepieces. It is a limited edition of only fifty and is proving to be much sought after.

There is an added appeal, the unexpected surprise. Selected purchasers may experience the skies of Hong Kong with the actor Michael Wong at the controls of his personal helicopter.

Michael Wong has over fifty films to his name. He is an avid watch collector with a love of flying. He demonstrates an enthusiasm he seeks to pass to others. To encourage the next generation to seek a career in Hong Kong’s aviation industry he founded “Operation Flying Eagle” in 2000, a programme offering the helicopter flying experience to young cadets of the Hong Kong Air Cadet Corp. He funds the programme and takes them up in his own helicopter.

The acting world and that of flying have much in common; careful preparation, split second timing and precision, reliance on others and confidence in one’s own abilities. The focus and dedication is also there in the creation of a fine watch. Bremont’s focus on details, getting them just right speaks of the same need to achieve perfection in delivery.

A closer look

The Bremont MW Heli-Chorus offers the reliability required in aviation and it is exciting in its design and technology.

Based on Bremont’s ALT-1P Chronograph it is the first in the Bremont range to have a black DLC case, achieved by applying a finish known as “Diamond Like Carbon”.

This is a most inspired choice of coating because the process and thence the product were originally developed by the Russian military for use on helicopter rotor blades. Now the application is used in a diverse array of engineering industries including motor sport, aerospace and bio-engineering. Bremont has always been at the leading edge of technology and with the helicopter link it is a most appropriate choice of finish for its latest piece.

There is, however, a sound engineering premise underpinning its usage.

DLC offers low friction and abrasion resistant qualities which enhances the durability of any item to which it is applied. It enhances product reliability, a key element in any area of technology and engineering whether it is the production of a helicopter or a fine watch.

There are other features worthy of note. The dial of sapphire crystal has nine layers of anti-reflective treatment on both sides which eliminates any unwanted reflections, a point I should particularly appreciate when on the flight deck.

I also value the rugged Trip-Tack case hardened to 2000 Vickers which ensures Bremont’s BE-54AE movement stays in perfect condition even in the harshest of environments.

The verdict

This latest offering from Bremont shares many of the qualities which lead to my decision to purchase a timepiece from the quintessentially British brand.

I enjoy the aesthetics, admire the depth of engineering and place my trust in this watch of perfectly executed creation.

My Bremont is fit for purpose and the perfect instrument for my professional role. I suspect Michael shares similar feelings for the MW Heli-Chrono.
